Lotus River scores latest Netball World Cup Mural

With just under 50 days to go until the Vitality Netball World Cup, today representatives from the City of Cape Town and the Netball World Cup 2023 Board unveiled the tenth and latest Netball World Cup 2023 legacy mural at Lotus River Recreation Centre.
In a series of legacy murals for Africa's first ever Netball World Cup, the City of Cape Town continues efforts to drive awareness of the momentous tournament with the unveiling of the latest Netball World Cup mural at Lotus River Recreation Centre.
The Lotus River mural is the tenth legacy mural, which is also significant in the countdown to the Vitality Netball World Cup as we pass the 50 days to go mark.
Similar murals were previously unveiled in Langa, Khayelitsha, Strand, Bellville South, Atlantis, Mitchells Plain, Kuils River, and Makhaza.
Cape Town painter and visual artist, Garth Wareley, known as AwehMigo created an art piece that honours the themes of Netball, Women sport, Cape Town, Africa, women empowerment and hope.
His passion for painting reflects through his easy identifiable semi-realistic visuals with the use of bold colours and balancing tones.
Together with the beautiful mural, the facility has also undergone some incredible upgrades. A new netball court and LED lighting has been fitted within the last year to accommodate for future night time programmes.
In addition, the centre has received a sponsorship of netball equipment such as bibs, balls, pumps and flat cones.
'Netball is becoming one of the fastest growing sports within our communities among both young boys and girls and Lotus River is no exception. With the Vitality Netball World Cup so close, the City is proud to continue its efforts in driving awareness for the tournament and growing the status of Netball by reviving community facilities and programmes so that communities get involved in being part of this historic tournament. We believe that hosting the Netball World Cup in Cape Town plays a fundamental role in developing the sport and uplifting local communities,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.
The Lotus River Recreation Centre is a popular community recreation hub. It is home to many netball players and offers a variety of extra recreational programmes during the week.
The netball programme has gained a lot of momentum at the facility and has seen rapid growth in participation and interest among young girls in the Lotus River community.
